Travellers heading to or from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport are facing significant disruptions due to the fierce winds and adverse weather brought on by Storm Darragh.
Passengers on 06DEC were being urged to brace for extensive delays and flight cancellations as the storm wreaks havoc on one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs.
As of 9 a.m. ET, FlightAware.com reported 135 cancelled flights in and out of AMS, and the situation could worsen throughout the day, depending on how the weather evolves. The airport's live updates indicate that most flights are either delayed by at least an hour or outright cancelled, prompting officials to advise passengers to be prepared for further disruptions.
KLM, the Dutch national airline and the largest operator at AMS, has been particularly hard hit, with nearly 100 flights already cancelled and more than 130 delayed.
Travellers should also be aware that reaching the airport might be challenging, as the storm is causing problems on the roads and railways as well.
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute has issued warnings about the potential dangers posed by strong gusts of wind, which are being reported at speeds between 75 and 90 km/h. These winds could lead to flying debris and fallen trees, making travel risky.
There are also wind warnings in place for parts of the UK and Ireland, where gusts could reach as high as 90 mph or 145 km/h. The BBC reports the winds are also expected to cause large waves, power cuts affecting mobile phone services, as well as damage to buildings and homes. Transport networks are also anticipated to be affected.
