Air Transat received Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) approval on 29DEC 2022 to fly routes between Canada and Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico, using two aircraft and flight crew provided by SmartLynx Airlines, a Latvia-based charter airline which provides aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) wet leasing.
Air Transat received approval for these flights beginning 13FEB 2023 to 14MAY 2023. The application did not specify which model of aircraft would be received.
In its determination, the CTA ruled that the airline met its wet lease requirements, in which a Canadian airline wet leasing more than 30 days from foreign lessors can only receive the number of aircraft up to 20 per cent of its Canadian registered aircraft. In its application, Air Transat noted that it had 31 aircraft, and the two aircraft wet leased from SmartLynx met the CTA's requirements.
