The decision by Celebrity to base Solstice in Europe for summer 2011 rather than returning to the Caribbean may solve a pricing problem for RCI.
Despite Celebrity being Royal Caribbean's premium line, agents report that Oasis is receiving premium rates over Solstice-class in the Caribbean. But in Europe Celebrity continues to achieve premium rates over Royal Caribbean ships.
An agent gave Cruise Week some pricing examples: "On Royal's Tuesday sales events, what often stands out is Europe. For instance, we have June 6 Navigator in the Med, seven-night inside for $550." In contrast, Celebrity rates appear to be holding firm in Europe.
However, in the Caribbean, what stands out to this agent is the close-in bookings on Solstice at appetizing rates. "I have clients going on Solstice this week," he relates. "They booked with me last Wednesday, a balcony guarantee for $799 (Aqua class)."
