Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says the state is filing a lawsuit against the CDC and the U.S. government demanding that cruise ships be allowed to start sailing “immediately.”

“Today, I'm happy to announce that on behalf of the tens of thousands of Floridians whose livelihood depends on the viability of an open cruise industry, Florida is fighting back. We're filing a lawsuit against the Federal government and the CDC demanding that our cruise ships be reopened immediately,” DeSantis told reporters.

“We don’t believe the federal government has the right to mothball a major industry for over a year based on very little evidence and very little data.”

He added that people will continue cruising despite U.S. waters being closed, just off another coast.

“Instead of flying to Miami, spending money to stay in our hotels, spending money to eat in our restaurants before they get on the ship, they’re going to fly to the Bahamas,” he said.

The CDC's current reopening plan calls for a phased approach to resuming cruises starting in mid-summer. Most major cruise lines that sail out of Florida have suspended U.S. operations through at least JUN. The CDC’s Conditional Sail Order is currently in effect until 01NOV.
